Sportsville Dargaville secures funding

Matakohe Primary School has become the first school in Northland to achieve a Heart Start Excellence Award from the Heart Foundation.

Stage one of the project has an estimated cost of $2.2 million, and with the Lotteries grant now secured, less than $200,000 is now required. This stage includes provision of six courts for shared tennis and netball use, plus the building of a 580-square-metre new facility, incorporating four large changing rooms, public toilets, storage facilities for user groups, a canteen/ coffee outlet and a tournament control office. A covered muster area is also included to provide shelter for players from rain and sun. Mr Biddle said the Lottery Community Facilities Fund Committee considered

the Dargaville application aligned very well with the committee’s priorities and funding criteria. The latest grant comes hard on the heels of a $1.033 million donation from Foundation North in November last year. “We are very thankful to the Lotteries Board for this fantastic grant, which now means that well over 90 per cent of the funds required to complete stage one of the facility have been confirmed.” Construction is likely to start later this year — Griffiths and Associates are underway as project managers, with the appointment of a main contractor one of their first tasks. ¢

To mark the occasion, students took part in a Jump Rope for Heart skipa-thon, which saw them raise money for the Heart Foundation while also getting their hearts and legs pumping. Former theatre actor and school teacher Alister Williams is the new director of the Art ‘n’ Tartan Wearable Art Awards, to be staged at Waipu next month.

Alaina Samson is a walking example of the saying ‘where there is a will there is a way’.

Mr Williams will direct a large contingent of artists, designers and a crew of volunteers. Promotions team member Patsy Montgomery says he brings to the show a lifetime of experience in theatre, music and teaching. “Alister was for a short time the former head of English at Otamatea High School in the late 70s and early 80s. He and his wife Susan and their family made many friends in the area but eventually moved south to Wellington. Later Alister moved north to play the role of Reverend McLeod with the Waipu Grand Pageant. “This provided opportunities for old friends to suggest that Alister and Susan consider returning to the north and in particular Waipu. The Northern Wairoa Returned Services Association has outlined a restructuring plan to take the club into the future.

The Dargaville Business Forum will be hosting Northland MP, Winston Peters, at a breakfast giving the business community the opportunity to hear his views on the economic recovery for rural New Zealand and funding for infrastructure in the regions. “As MP for Northland Mr Peters can give us an insight on what he believes is happening in the Kaipara, Northland and to the rest of the country,” said chair Peter Boyd. “His views on where the strong points are in the community and where we should be heading and trying to build upon will be useful knowledge for the district. As business people it will be a good opportunity to hear his opinion on national and local matters including council and the upcoming local body elections.” There will be a question and answer time at the session. “It will be good to discuss what really matters to us as residents, business people and the local community,” said Mr Boyd. Mr Peters will talk on topics such as the regions producing export receipts, and attracting tourists and the need to ensure a fair return of the nation’s wealth to the regions and the taking of water by foreign companies for a token. “We welcome new members to the Business Forum and would like to hear from people who may be interested in becoming committee members to assist in driving a vibrant business

Dargaville couple Donna and Nigel Randell have brought home a box full of trophies after winning big at the recent New Zealand Amateur Bodybuilding Association Counties Manukau Regional Championship. Donna won Miss Figure 2016 and International Figure, whilst Nigel was first place in the Masters Men 40 plus class. A ‘March for Moko’ is being held in Dargaville this coming Monday and the community is being asked to take part and show their support. Kaipara Abuse Prevention Strengthening Families coordinator, Bethne Smith, is encouraging everyone to support the cause. “Anyone who wants to see justice for Moko or anyone who is opposed to child abuse should come along.” SOS Kaipara worked with 49 clients that have suffered child abuse in the last year. “What we want to do is get that figure down to zero. After-hours care reviewed Changes made to Kaipara’s after-hours healthcare last year have been reviewed and found to be working well. Kaipara Community Health Trust chief executive officer, Debbie Evans, and board members met with Dargaville Medical Centre, St John and Dargaville Hospital to review the changes to how people were treated between 10pm and 7am in Dargaville. “During this period, admittance to hospital was for extremely critical patients only, and others were transferred by ambulance to Whangarei Hospital or via the Rescue Helicopter — whatever was the most appropriate,” said Ms Evans. These changes occurred when Dargaville Medical Centre notified Northland District Health Board that they were no longer able to provide medical care for inpatients at Dargaville Hospital. The NDHB then stepped in to retain the services by taking over the contract and providing their own doctors. Between January to April this year there has been 29 transfers in total between the hours of 10pm and 7am, with 11 in January, 12 in February, four in March and three in April. Patients who couldn’t be assisted in Dargaville were always transferred to Whangarei under the old system. Practice manager/Hospice manager Judy Harris, explained that a plan is currently being developed to ensure palliative care patients have appropriate access to the Kowhai Room.

John Foster was a New Zealand artist and farmer who lived most of his life on a farm near Wellsford and several years living in Mangawhai Heads before he died in 2003. Exhibition coordinator, Grant Mitchell, says the aim of the exhibition, A Life With Colour, is to introduce Mr Foster’s work to the community and to showcase something that is of interest to the public in the Mangawhai area. “John Foster spent a lot of time in Mangawhai. He built a bach and stayed there from 1972 until 1980 and during that period he painted a number of murals,” Mr Mitchell said. “It is not just an exhibition of painting, but of John Foster’s life, the area and how he depicted the area through the use of colour. “A lot of local people don’t know about him as he was more widely known outside the community. It will be good to introduce his work and give people a different way of viewing the community in which they live in.” Mr Foster attended four summer schools at the School of Fine Arts,

University of Auckland from 1968 until 1971 and was influenced by his tutors, Sir Tosswill Woollaston and Colin McCahon. The exhibition opens on July 16 and will present examples of his works including two of his murals. The murals include Picnic on the Beach, which took four years to complete and Four Seasons on the Farm, which is made up of 365 separate paintings that depict farm life over one year. ¢

Children between the ages of two and four years old now have a regular chance to burn off some energy with the Wellsford Peewee Soccer Club. Wellsford mums, Ashleigh Tipene and Sylvia Adams, began the club two years ago when they discovered there was no soccer club for their young sons. Ashleigh says both their boys who are around the same age are energetic, and she and Sylvia knew there were other children in the area who would benefit from being involved in the sport. “These games are just for fun and there are no rules. “This is just kicking the ball around and developing skills. If they choose to continue to play soccer at the next level they have an idea of what to do,” says Sylvia. “It’s a good starting point for them if they want to continue into junior and senior soccer. It gives them some experience with soccer balls and being on the field so they aren’t scared. They

actually want to get on the field and have a go. It gives them the opportunity to see some of the older children play because it is held at the same time. The uniforms are sponsored by local businesses, Adams Installation and Spice Lounge, and the team is supported with player of the day certificates by Warkworth McDonald’s and Clever Endeavours. This week has seen the Ford Motor Company step up to two big challenges both on and off the grid. Not only have the automakers from Dearborn, Michigan taken to the racing grid on the hallowed tarmac of France’s Circuit de la Sarthe, they’ve also thrown down the gauntlet to rivals at New Zealand’s National Fieldays. A massive ‘off the grid’ experience was constructed to showcase the capability of the Ford Everest following up from last year’s very successful off-road demo of the Ranger ute. Ford trackscapers literally moved a mountain of gravel and dirt on the Mystery Creek site to allow patrons a chance to see what the new SUV can do. Predictably, the challenging course — with water wading pools, mud, steep hills and rugged terrain — proved a big hit with Fieldays visitors. The choice of the

Everest as Ford’s ‘weapon of choice’ to tackle the track indicates more than just a whole lot of confidence in the Rangerderived four wheel drive. It’s also a clear signal that Ford intend to stand above the heated scrap for top Kiwi ute. Other brands came to the Fieldays prepped to put their light commercials to the fore — the team from Dearborn are supremely confident of retaining the crown. In France, Kiwi driver Scott Dixon took the wheel as one of the drivers in Ford’s A team, piloting the new GT

The Australian outback. A sun-baked wilderness of brutal temperatures, insidious red dust and hidden mineral wealth. Digging this bounty from the earth and, indeed, undertaking any kind of endeavour other than sheer survival here — takes tough machines, and even tougher lubricants to keep them going. The unique challenges of the red desert often proved too much for conventional engine oils made for the more civilised climes of Europe and America. So, in 1975, a new company was formed to tackle the problem. They were called Anglomoil, and their solution was to blend high quality synthetic additives with base oil in a way which guaranteed full protection for engine parts, even under the dual hammer blows of searing heat and invasive dust. Sometimes cheaper oils may cite certain operating parameters on the bottle, but struggle to go the distance under demanding conditions. Anglomoil’s product is designed to meet and exceed those parameters, long after the first turn of the ignition. Needless to say, the successful Anglomoil formula was adopted very enthusiastically. Industries from road freight to mining to agriculture and heavy industry saw a massive drop in repair downtime as the new lubricant out-lasted previous choices, protecting moving parts of expensive machinery. A Hui was held at Te Houhanga Marae, Dargaville in August 2014 to discuss the serious decline of Toheroa on Ripiro beach. The decision was made to place a rāhui on the taking of Toheroa on Ripiro beach from Maunganui Bluff to Tikitiki stream to help revive the critically depleted beds. Notice is hereby given by the Te Roroa Whatu Ora Trust and Manawhenua Board that there will be no issuing of permits to harvest Toheroa due to the decline and reducing stock numbers. Te Roroa excercises their manawhenua and customary authorities over their area. In this instance from the Maunganui Bluff to Tikitiki south Māhuta This rāhui has NOT been lifted.
